Whenever I pass the Littlewoods building on Edge Lane in Liverpool I’m struck by its’ faded beauty and art deco echoes. I’ve thought for years it would make a great modern art gallery, in the spirit of Tate Modern. I’ve just read that it’s going to be made into a hotel and business complex with offices and shops. I’m assuming that it will receive a thorough tarting up for that, and whilst I’m glad that the building will be looked after, I will miss the romance in its’ crumbling appearance – its’ chipped, dirty paintwork and the stray vegetation growing from within its’ walls. I made this quick sketch this morning in Uni Pin pens on A6 paper.
