The Satisfaction in the Completion of an Old Painting

Painting of Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral

Sometimes I feel like I’m going round in circles with a painting – applying layer after layer of paint and never getting any closer to finishing. Occasionally under such circumstances I’ll leave a painting indefinitely. This is one such painting, which I started and left sometime last year. I was searching for something, but I didn’t know what.

I found this painting lurking in a cupboard recently and it didn’t look as far off completion as I remembered. So today I put it back on the easel and within an hour or so it was finished. Funny how sometimes you can’t see the wood for the trees.

The painting depicts Liverpool Metropolitan Cathedral and was painted in Winsor & Newton alkyd paints on a 22” x 18” canvas. It was painted using photographs taken from the tower of the Anglican Cathedral.
