I’ll be taking part in the Winter Arts Market at St George’s Hall in Liverpool this Sunday (8th December 2013). Landscape art depicting ‘local’ landmarks tend to be those most popular with visitors, so I thought I would try to do a few smaller, affordable pieces during the course of this week (time permitting), to fit in omnipresent, artist-standard Ikea frames.

This first piece depicts Liverpool Anglican Cathedral. I drew it from reference photographs I took several years ago when putting together some work for a solo exhibition in 2003. Making today’s sketch reminded me of the old problem of working from several reference photographs taken from the same spot, each distorting perspective differently. For this reason I found making this sketch a little more problematic than normal. Working from life is certainly preferable from this perspective (no pun intended).

The artwork is rendered in mixed media on Daler Rowney watercolour paper. I started of with an outline pencil drawing, before adding some colour in gouache. I then added a little coloured pencil, some black pen outlines and squiggles, some further greyscale pencil touches and finally a bit of pastel. There was just about enough room on the dining room table for all the media. The image size is around 14cm square.
